Grab ahold’a'them mainstays and man the deck. This time around we’re gettin’ twisted. Trouble & Bass‘s very own ‘The Captain‘ brings the next instalment of Eisandnose Exclusives, hauling in a fresh catch of R&B Dubstep, Grime, hefty House, Juke and bass filled treats. Handling the wheels of steel like like none other, we’ve never known a mixtape like it. Mapping a journey through some of his favourite and most recent records, trouble and bass exclusives, hefty filthy numbers, heart throbbing melodies and a collection of unexpected melodies. We caught up with el capitaan himself, to find out what goes on behind the scenes at Trouble & Bass HQ, what he gets up to and whether he’s a Trouble maker, or a bass fiend. Every captain has his ship. What’s in your boat, and whats a normal day at sea for you?

Hahaha. Every day I spend in the T&B klubhaus working/managing the Trouble & Bass label and Booking agency, making sure everything is going as planned with releases, events, bookings, merch and all that great stuff we’re doing.

Tell us about Trouble & Bass. Where are you from, who are you for, and what do you do?

Trouble & Bass was born in NYC, started by Drop The Lime, and we represent heavy bass music of all kinds. Artists on our label include Drop The Lime, AC Slater, Star Eyes, Deathface, Mikix The Cat, Little Jinder, Samo Sound Boy, Zombies For Money, Ursa Major, Tomb Crew, Acid Jacks and lots and lots of affiliates and friends. I’m the Vice President of the company and I take care of the general every day to day label managing duties. I also DJ as 1/4 of the Trouble & Bass DJ Crew, I’m the president of Trouble & Bass Bookings that our gal Kelley Frank is the agent for, and I also direct and produce music videos and am the creative director of the label. Lots of things going down that I oversee.

What inspires and influences you and Trouble and bass?

Since we’re so wide spread, each of our artists bring their own influences and flavor to their style and music, but for me I’m really inspired by 80′s/90′s retro futurism, horror and sci-fi movies and soundtracks, and of course all the music I’m listening to (check the mix!). Right now I’m really into collecting VHS tapes, so stuff like Blade Runner, Escape From NY, A Better Tomorrow, old John Carpenter movies, and all that fun stuff get me inspired creatively.

A Typical day at the office?

Coffee! Head into the office and go over bookings stuff with Kelley and merch stuff with Turtle (Sarah our production manager). Answering fun e mails and then making sure all our releases are on the right course, getting anything done that needs to be finalized, artwork for releases, or press or any of that stuff. My man Harrison helps us with our two radio shows for Scion A/V Radio and then our show on ESS (iHeartradio) and our superstar intern Natalie runs our weekly Free BASS Monday contests and helps with other fun stuff. So each day there’s something to tackle.

Do you have any projects, collaborations or releases which were particular favourites of yours?

Ah man, so many great things in the past, Our recent collaboration with L’Amour Supreme was great, he made the T&B logo into a black metal logo. The new Little Jinder single “Keep On Dreaming” produced by 12th Planet & Flinch with remixes by Deadboy, Starkey, Distal and Living Graham Bond, coming out in February is really great, every remix on there is amazing. The latest Star Eyes single is also beautiful, she really showed her development as both a producer and singer/songwriter, it’s like a goth dubstep ballad, again with amazing remixes. The next Deathface EP is gonna be pretty bonkers, he’s found a new vocalist/singer to work with and some of the demos are pretty insane, his music is the hardest in the game right now without a doubt.

As a DJ, who’s your crowd, and what could we expect to hear on the rocky seas of a Captain set?

I definitely play an eclectic mix of tunes depending on what city I’m playing in or what kind of party. But I love to drop a mix of bass tunes and some dubstep and of course throw in some rap and R&B.

Trouble and Bass alone hosts numerous talented artists and musicians all playing different genres. What’s your thoughts on the music scene today, and where do you feel the future of electronic music lies?

Electronic music keeps growing in popularity whether it be in the form of trance or dubstep or electro, or whatever which doesn’t always reflect on the underground music scene which I think T&B relates to the most. This growing in popularity can only help all types of electronic music, in hopes that music lovers are interested in developing their tastes. Electronic music is always mutating and genre’s are getting mashed together to form new and uprising sounds, which is the best part, but I think right now music in the US is kinda confused. There are so many styles happening at the moment, it’s hard to say what style is going to be the future. Lots of what is popular is kinda shit, but when has that ever not been the case with popular music. Obviously a lot of whats going on in the underground scene is amazing and so inspirational, we’re still having fun and doing what we love.

What advice would you give to up and coming producers, and what do you look for in an artists work?

I really enjoy producers who have their own style, and of course not sticking to a specific ‘genre’ or ‘sound’. Lots of the artists we’ve signed in the past were making music that no one on our label sounded like, so that’s something to keep in mind when sending tunes to labels. A few things that kind of always turn me off (maybe these go without saying) are pop music bootlegs, or even ‘the most popular current style of music “remix“‘ or a goofy production name.

What’s in the Exclusive Eisandnose Mixtape you’ve so kindly put together for us?

I threw in some unreleased T&B tunes, and some upcoming releases from some of my favorite artists, as well as loads of new grime tunes, and some random tunes that I’ve been listening to a lot lately; The Dream, Echo & The Bunny Men, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd. So there’s a mix of what you’d hear me play in the club and what you might hear me play in the office.

If you had to choose one… Trouble, or Bass?

Of course Trouble, I’ve been getting into Trouble since I can remember!
